Dutch chemicals maker Akzo Nobel NV said on Friday it had reached a settlement in a patent dispute with Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. over a generic version of an oral contraceptive.

Barr has agreed to pay Organon, the human healthcare business of Akzo, $139 million to settle the patent litigation and acquire rights to the oral contraceptive Mircette, Akzo said in a statement.

The settlement includes the rights to U.S. marketing approval.

Duramed, a unit of Barr, sells a generic version of Mircette under the name Kariva. Organon is the exclusive licensee under the patent for Mircette.
